Shift At Midnight is a paid Windows detective-horror simulation by Bun Muen and Kwalee. Play alone or in online co-op for up to three players, run a gas station, investigate every customer, and survive the monsters created by a bad call.

What is Shift At Midnight?
Shift At Midnight is an indie simulation and detective-horror game built in Unity. Bun Muen developed it, Kwalee published it, and the full game released on July 22, 2026. Its Steam App ID is 3722330.
The premise is simple: keep a gas station running through the night while deciding which customers are human. The tension comes from having two jobs at once. Routine retail work earns the nightly quota, while careful investigation prevents a doppelganger from leaving the store and returning in a much more dangerous form.

The core gameplay loop
1. Run the gas station
Restock shelves, receive deliveries, clean the store, serve customers, and sell enough goods to reach the quota. Each shift is randomly generated, so exact customer order and workload are not fixed.
2. Investigate every customer
Check identification, compare the customer with the computer record, question suspicious details, and watch behavior before deciding whether the person is human. This is the main deduction layer: a rushed approval can turn an ordinary shift into a survival encounter.
3. Make the call
Let a customer leave only when the evidence is convincing. If the evidence points to a doppelganger, deal with the threat inside the station and clean up before business continues.
4. Survive a mistake
If a creature escapes, the game pivots from management to defense. Barricade doors, place traps, use the equipment available during that shift, and find a safe place to hide. The gameplay guide explains these systems without revealing late-story solutions.
Modes, multiplayer, and progression
Story Mode
Story Mode contains 13 randomly generated shifts. “Randomly generated” does not mean the story has no structure; it means the precise task and encounter sequence can differ from the videos or screenshots in a guide. Use the full walkthrough for decision rules and landmarks rather than expecting every event at an identical second.
Solo and online co-op
Steam confirms single-player, multiplayer, co-op, and online co-op. A lobby supports up to three players. The official feature list also includes proximity voice chat and character customization. A second player is not required because single-player is listed separately.
Endless Mode roadmap
The launch-page snapshot describes a free Endless Mode beta planned for Q4 2026, with additional customers, weapons, traps, and monsters. It is a roadmap item, not a launch feature. Check the updates page before assuming the mode is available in the current build.
Platforms and Steam Deck status
The official store lists Windows only as the native desktop platform. It does not list native macOS or Linux builds.
The captured July 17, 2026 compatibility test rates the game Playable on Steam Deck and records successful SteamOS operation through Proton. “Playable” is not the same as “Verified”: the default controller setup does not expose every function, some prompts show non-Deck glyphs, and text entry may require manually opening the on-screen keyboard. The test does confirm legible interface text and acceptable default graphics performance.
For CPU, GPU, memory, DirectX, network, and storage details, use the system requirements guide.
Supported languages and accessibility features
The captured Steam listing contains nine languages, and each is marked for interface, full audio, and subtitles:
- English
- French
- German
- Spanish (Spain)
- Japanese
- Russian
- Simplified Chinese
- Traditional Chinese
- Portuguese (Brazil)
Steam also lists adjustable text size, custom volume controls, and stereo sound. These are store-level feature declarations; they do not amount to a full accessibility audit of every menu or interaction.
Reviews and current-player snapshot
The Steam API snapshot collected on August 2, 2026 recorded:
- 6,179 total reviews
- 5,469 positive and 710 negative reviews
- 88.5% positive, corresponding to Very Positive in the captured summary
- 14,521 players online at the moment the player-count request was made
These values are a dated snapshot, not lifetime constants. Review totals and concurrent players change continuously, so the figures are most useful as launch-period context.
Official trailers and screenshots
The store snapshot contains five official trailers: Launch Trailer, New Release Date Trailer, Steam Next Fest Trailer, Wishlist Trailer, and Release Date Reveal Trailer. It also contains seven official 1920×1080 screenshots.
Steam package, depot, launch, and save facts
The captured technical records are summarized below for players who need install or ownership context. They are deliberately kept compact; regional prices belong on the price and buying guide, while patch details belong on the updates page.
| Area | What the August 2–4 snapshot verifies |
|---|---|
| Purchase records | 4 store bundles, 1 standard store package, and 1 CD-key package record |
| Main depot | 1 content depot; 846.78 MiB on disk and 360.97 MiB recorded download size |
| Branches | 1 visible public branch plus a recorded private-branch count of 1 |
| Captured public build | Build 24450017, built July 29, 2026 |
| Launch configuration | Install folder Shift At Midnight; executable ShiftAtMidnight.exe |
| Steam Cloud | 9.54 MiB quota, up to 6 files, with *.data save files under the game's Kwalee profile folder |
| Achievements | 10 total: 7 standard entries and 3 flagged as hidden; captured unlock rates range from 96.9% to 8.9% |
| Store media | 7 screenshots and 5 trailer entries |
| Related apps | 1 linked Demo record: Shift At Midnight Demo (App 4050060), also labeled Shift At Midnight Multiplayer Demo |
The depot size is not the same as the store's required free-space figure. Steam's minimum and recommended specifications both request 3 GB available storage, which leaves room for installation overhead and updates.
What the captured data does not prove
- Achievement rates: the August 4 export verifies all 10 entries and their captured unlock rates. Those percentages change as more players earn them, and this low-spoiler overview does not expose the three hidden titles.
- Related apps: the linked-app export verifies one Demo record. A relationship record does not prove that the demo is installed, owned, bundled with the full game, or currently downloadable in every region.
- Screenshot detail rows: that export returned no table rows, although it captured seven image entries. The published count of seven is independently confirmed by the successful official store payload.
- Future patches and modes: a roadmap date or private branch is evidence of development activity, not proof that unreleased content is playable.
Who is the game for?
Shift At Midnight suits players who enjoy observation games, co-op communication, light retail simulation, and horror that punishes a wrong deduction. It is less about memorizing one fixed solution and more about following a repeatable process: finish the store work, verify the evidence, communicate the decision, and prepare for defense.
New players should continue with the beginner guide. Players who already understand the premise can open the gameplay guide or go directly to the complete walkthrough.
